My guess is that Amazon purchased a bunch of factory rejects with imperfections, and sold them at a discount. When it looked suspect, I compared it to a new one from bestbuy. The one I got looks like crap compared to the one from bestbuy. Same thing for my "Skin" from Skinit, that I ordered from Amazon. I wondered how Amazon could sell a $15 product for $2.85, now I know. The skin didn't even have a cut out for my Ipod nano display. I had to us a razor blade to cut a rectangle in it. Ridiculous.

While they are similar, there are some key differences. The Viking symbol on the back is colored in white, rather than just an outline, and the case covers the on button on the front. The case itself seems a little bigger overall. Overall the case is okay, but its not the item I wished to purchase, so keep that in mind.

I've been using this 2-in-1 audio cable for over a month, and have to say it works quite well. The audio is crystal clear and is 100% compatible with my iPod Touch 4th generation. As others have said, it is constructed quite well, and the fabric covering gives it a quality feel. After doing a lot of research, this is probably the best option for a direct line out to aux with charger available. I highly recommend it!

I love this Kensington 2-in-1 Charger and Audio Cable for iPhone/iPod. I guess they couldn't think of a shorter name for the product so they named it exactly what it does - a 2-in-1 cable that functions as a charger for your iPhone/iPod and has an audio cable out that plugs into an auxilary connection. Did you get that or did you want me to state it again? Just kidding.

I was looking for a cable that does exactly this and I was surprised that there are no other branded manufacturer that came up with a simple product similar to this. We see the same manufacturers that make in-car iPhone/iPod charger also make iPhone/iPod audio cables. Why is it so difficult to have them combine the product into one.

There are generic cables that do the same at less than half the price of this Kensington, but do not have the same make quality as this one.

PROS:

1. Thick cables enveloped in tangle-free nylon shielding. The outer nylon shielding adds to the cable's robustness as well as helps eliminate coiling up.
2. Semi-compact charger included with the cable that has a yellow light to indicate when there is power going to the charger.
3. The audio is taken from the direct iPhone/iPod line level out signal which is cleaner due to less processing apart from converting from digital to analog.
4. The headphone jack audio out is not used which is more cumbersome because you have to adjust the audio signal to maximum volume to get a similar line level out as the direct connection.
5. There is only one cable to plug to your iPhone/iPod in order to act as a charger and grab the line level audio at the same time.

CONS:

1. The charger portion could be made more compact just like the other auto chargers that are being made these days.
2. The connection to the dock needs more holding power as it is easy to yank out accidentally. There are some iPhone dock connections that you have to press on both ends to unlatch. This is what they should have done to this item.
3. Although the cables are thick and protected with an out nylon wrap, the audio cables should be made to be able to also detach when not needed if you only want to use it as a charger without the need for the other cable dangling unnecessarily. This also enables the user to replace the audio cable if it has been frayed or if they need something longer.
4. They should build into the cable a mini remote that controls the Play/Pause/Rewind/Skip functions so you don't have to fiddle with your device itself which is dangerous when driving.

I've seen reviews where some are complaining about audio interference issues which occurs where there is poor grounding of the vehicle power adapter and the car stereo. If there is no isolation then yes you will hear high pitched whining being fed into the audio portion. As for my experience, I have no issues like this on my vehicle.

The price is on the high side, but the construction and material quality versus similar generic cables makes paying this kind of price worth it.

I'm glad I passed on Griffin's iTrip DualConnect which provides the same direct line level out, but also combines an over-the-air FM radio solution which is inferior and unnecessary for users who are looking for an AUX audio connection. I'm surprised Griffin hasn't come up with this kind of no-brainer solution. But it's Kensington who thought about it and is reaping the rewards.

I would definitely recommend this product which is surprisingly one of the few you will find for a production combination like this. If they can work out the improvements above they will have a winner on the next product iteration.

A month ago I bought the Netgear WGT624 Version 2 wireless "Super G" router, on the basis that it was affordable and that Netgear had always given me good service. Having professionally installed networks in the past, I have always been happy with Netgear's commercial products and was expecting this one to be the same quality. The router was super easy to install and set up, their setup wizard was great, and when it worked, the router was blazing fast. I only got to use the cable connections, never got time to setup a wireless connection. As other reviewers have said, it was setup and running within five minutes of plugging it in.

***CAVEAT*** - It worked GREAT for two days, then began to randomly drop the LAN connections, resulting in the dreaded "Network Cable Unplugged" message (search for "netgear wgt624 network cable unplugged" or search Netgear's forums for pages of similar complaints with no resolutions). This got worse, beginning at a few times per day, finally getting down to every few minutes - it now only worked a few times per day! After a week of swapping NIC's, cables, and confirming settings, I finally broke down and e-mailed Netgear tech support - who was kind enough to reply after two days with the same things I had already tried (confirm settings, hardware reset, update firmware, etc.), and a request for more detailed system info if the problem persisted. Even with the most current firmware release, it would not work reliably - so I sent them back every detail they had requested but got no response after a week.

When I finally called them, I got their tech support department in India who confirmed that I was eligible for free tech support (they only offer it for 90 days from purchase, then you have to pay) and then began to go over the e-mails we'd swapped. After 10 minutes with no luck, he suggested that I try the Beta version of the firmware release, AND that this beta version would void my Netgear warranty. After making this suggestion, he said goodbye and hung up in the middle of the conversation. When I immediately called back to India, I got a different tech and was told that I was already out of the 90 day free tech support period (I bought the router a month ago mind you) and that I would have to pay for any support or to get the router replaced under the warranty. After some argument, he finally agreed to help me, but found that the router was indeed defective - and pointed out that there is a known problem with these particular models and he could not guarantee that a replacement would work any better.

In order to get the router replaced under the warranty, I would have had to fax or mail my receipt to India (not a toll free #), and wait a week for them to confirm that my Router was within the warranty. After this was done, I would have to call them back and PAY for the "Extended Tech Support," since their computer showed that my router was out of the 90 day free support period (again, it was only a month old). If this return call to tech support proved that my router was defective, I would then get an RMA and have to either ship the defective router to India at my expense and wait three weeks for them to ship a refurbished replacement unit back, or pay them $30 to have a replacement shipped to me first, then ship the defective unit back to them at my expense.

***SOLUTION*** - I returned the router and bought another brand. In searching the Internet, I found that the equivalent D-Link model (the DI-624) has strikingly similar problems so I bought a Linksys and have been happy thus far. I agree with the reviews that the Linksys is not quite as foolproof to set up, but it's worked great for two days now. We'll see.

Netgear WGT624 Review by John R. Johns II "jrjohnsii" (Washougal, WA USA)

I purchased this product after Netgear posted its long-promised 2.0 firmware for the WAG511 card, finally giving it 108Mbps support.

The good:
The product works as advertised; Turbo G mode gives me excellent speeds even at a modest distance from the router.

The not so perfect:
Netgear's Turbo mode support is incompatible with b/g mode. You can either set the router to b/g mode (max 54Mbps) or you can set it to 108 mode (any wireless device that does not support 108 mode will not see the router). By comparison, on October 13 2003 competitor D-Link announced firmware upgrades to add "Dynamic Mode" to their products, supporting 108Mbps mixed with b/g mode. Netgear's website states: "A firmware upgrade will be available allowing mix mode (802.11g and 108Mbps turbo) operation in the near future," so hopefully Netgear will match D-Link's features soon.

Also, there is no way to disable NAT on the WGT624 with the current firmware (rev 1.1.1). This annoys me, as I really just wanted a Wireless Access Point, but Netgear has no WAP with 108Mbps support, and 108Mbps support is why I bought the WGT624.

**Update**: I wrote the above originally on October 23 2003. In January 2004, Netgear finally provided mixed mode support across all versions of the original WGT624 (apparently different firmware is required for different serial numbers). Also, there is now a newer version of the hardware, dubbed the WGT624v2. Newer firmware for the WGT624v2 allegedly improves SPI performance if you use it (I don't). No hardware upgrades are available if you have the original WGT624. Unfortunately, Amazon.com doesn't have a separate ASIN for the v2 model so it is difficult to tell if you will receive an original WGT624 or a v2 when you purchase on Amazon.com.

I bought this router to replace a Netgear MR814 v1 that I outgrew.

Right out of the box, this router worked without changing any settings at all! I turned off all pc's and my cable modem, connected the router, turned on my cable modem, then the router, then the pc's. Everything worked like a champ.

Next I went into the web interface (which you can get to by opening Internet Explorer and typing 192.168.0.1 into the address bar, then type in the user and password) to setup the security settings. I was very impressed to see all of the latest security features included. Probably the one feature that I like the best was the auto firmware upgrade feature. The firmware of the router is what tells the router how to work. New versions of firmware can fix problems as well as give you new features. On many other routers the process of upgrading the firmware can be quite difficult for "normal" people that aren't techies. With this router, you just click "Firmware Upgrade" and it will go out to netgear, find new firmware if available, and install it all automatically for you. Great feature.

Range was also a big deal for me as the house it was being installed in was a split 3 level house with the router being in the 2nd floor. I never used to be able to go outside at all with my old router and the signal in the bottom floor was always very weak. This router lets me have full coverage throughout the house and venture off into my backyard to the edge of my property! Amazing improvement. I am using the Netgear WGT511 card in one laptop, the 802.11b pci card in a desktop downstairs, and a wired card in a desktop upstairs, all with no problems at all.

I just received this fraudulent "First Edition" of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. The first thing I did was turn to the 12 Steps on page 37 of this book. I was horrified to find the 12th Step uses the language of the later editions "a spiritual awakening" rather than the phrase a "spiritual experience" that is the actual wording in the "First Edition." So, this is obviously not a true reproduciton of the First Edition. It is a bogus fraud in claiming to be the real "First Edition." Also the pages do not correspond to the "First Edition" or any later edition. So, if you wish to quote the pages from Alcoholics Anonymous at a meeting or to a newcomer you will considered out of your mind. It is very poorly laid out and subtitled and there are even subtitiles that don't even occur in any of the official Conference approved editions. It appears that somebody named Benei Noaj has stolen the copyrighted Big Book and is attempting to make money by selling a fraudulent copy he claims is the First Edition, but really isn't. He should be sued by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. which owns the copyright to this book. It is very strangely laid out and put together in what seems like a hurried fashion for money making purposes and falsely claims to be the "First Edition" of the Big Book. It is not. There are other exact reproductions of the First Edition which precisely duplicate the original which are worth purchasing if you really want a reproduction of the First Edition. This is a worthless phoney edition that is not worth the paper it is printed on. Don't Buy It! I would hope that Amazon.Com removes this book from their inventory. It is not what it claims and may be an outright violation of copyright law.

Alcoholics Anonymous : Big Book Review by PhDBlonde (Aiken, SC)

While World Services may have lost the copyright to this, this is not the first edition. In reviewing it with sponsorship, the first edition is vastly different. I found it disturbing to realize that the first 164 pages are not from the first edition. When I read the first edition on line years ago, it appeared to be more direct and included more "musts" rather than suggestions. I think that the first editions out there my be watered down from the the second or third edition. Not only that, but in trying to redistribute this book, it's difficult to use because the first 164 pages are in less than 160 pages. A newcomer would not be able to follow this in a Big Book Study. Would someone please clarify?

Alcoholics Anonymous : Big Book Review by James G. Greenhill "Jim Greenhill" (Durango, CO USA)

It perplexes me there are so few reviews of this great book. Last time I checked, there were eight -- at least it's double digits now.

It perplexes me because this book has saved literally millions of lives. For anyone struggling with alcoholism, this is the way to get sober. The principles of the program can -- and have been -- applied to just about any addiction. This program is the foundation of Cocaine Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and every other 12 step program. This is where it all started.

My pastor mentioned in church just today how the sprituality of people who've been in 12 step programs is sometimes especially striking. That's true. It's because if a person follows the 12 steps, they will find it a life-changing experience. They will not be exactly the same person they were when they started. For more on this, see a passage in the book known in the program that took its name from the book's title as "the promises."

If you read this book, also read the accompanying 12 Steps and 12 Traditions volume. The two go together -- though if you read only one read this one.

The book is especially helpful in dealing with the issue of a higher power.

The book goes way beyond what someone will find in a typical AA meeting. A person who is attempting sobriety needs this book, a sponsor and the meetings.

This is, statistically, the best shot there is at sobriety. This book and the program it spawned are an extraordinary gift for those who choose to accept them.

The newcomer might find the book somewhat dated. Stick with it. It's worth it. And, as time goes by, it will become clearer and clearer.

This is a great remote as long as you know how you intend to use it. Like the description says, this remote can be programmed for 4 devices and supports just one activity (the "watch tv" function). Note that this is a no-frills version of the Harmony remotes. If you're used to Harmony remotes, you'll likely be disappointed. It uses the Logitech database of devices for programming the remote, but it automatically assigns devices to function buttons and this cannot be changed in the software. My receiver got assigned to the "DVD" button and my htpc to the "VCR/Aux" button--not very intuitive, obviously. Aside from the one activity button, it basically functions like a universal remote, albeit a very high quality one.

I got the 300i to use with my htpc running win 7 media center, a Pioneer receiver, and a Vizio HD tv. Here's the most important part: since my htpc drives everything in my living room, I only need one "activity" button. That means I hardly ever use the separate device buttons.

Build quality is impressive. It feels solid, buttons are easy to push and have a nice amount of travel. With the 300i, you get a glossy chassis that looks great but it is a fingerprint magnet. My main gripe is the absence of backlit buttons: only the device buttons light up momentarily when pushed. But then again, you're getting the most inexpensive remote of the Harmony line.

Setup is easy, as long as you're patient.

1. Attach the remote to your pc with the included USB cable
2. Go to the website and download the software (which opens in your web browser)
3. Follow the prompts to add your devices (use "Microsoft Media Center SE" as the device for your WMC htpc). The software prompts you with make and models.
4. If it doesn't have the device in the database, it will learn the basic commands directly from your existing remote.
5. You can customise the buttons for each device. If there are buttons on your original remote that were not imported, you can teach them to the 300i. I had no problem doing this with my old Microsoft remote.
6. You can program the "watch tv" button to turn on any combination of your devices. I set it to turn on the tv, receiver, and wake the pc from sleep. The button also turns off the tv and receiver and puts the htpc to sleep.
7. Finally, you can set the volume controls to be handled by any device. I have the 300i set to use my receiver exclusively for all volume regardless of which device is selected.
8. Sync the remote and disconnect from the pc. That's it. Took me maybe 20 minutes.

It just works. As soon as it was configured, I showed my wife and she was thrilled: "you mean I don't have to get up to turn everything on and off?!" In fact, the one button to turn everything on and off is exactly why I got this remote as I don't need other activities.

The only "issues" thus far are mostly related to adapting to a new device. First, the 300i has a good broadcast range but sometimes it misses a device. I think this is because I'm used to holding my old remote at a different angle. Adjusting the angle slightly fixes the problem.

Second, you can't push the buttons rapid fire. There's a momentary lag after each button push. Again, this is only noticeable while adjusting from using my old remote. It doesn't really affect normal usage, even while skipping through commercials in recorded tv shows.

Third, the Logitech software requires you to register to use the software. This only requires an email address and password. If you have more than one remote, however, you will need to register each one separately (with a different email address for each). I don't understand why Logitech couldn't design the software to use multiple devices per email address. This isn't a problem in my little house, but people with multiple systems in multiple rooms might take issue with this.

On the whole, I'm very please with this remote and I have no problem recommending it. Just know WHY you're getting it, and you won't be disappointed.

Logitech 915-000143 Review by saucysauce

I have a Bose AV18 surround system and every universal remote I tried it with it didn't work. The remote that came with the Bose was a radio remote and didn't properly work with my new cable box, plus the Bose remote costs $100 and is flimsy.
This remote works with the Bose, the cable box, tv, and dvd player flawlessly. The online programming is a breeze and allows you to program any button to any function you want. Even if it doesn't have the function you can take your old remote and teach the Logitech the command pretty easily.
Hands down the best universal remote on the market.

Logitech 915-000143 Review by Dave (Raleigh, NC)

Normally, when I see 1-star reviews, I tend to take them with a healthy bit of salt.

In the past, I would have given Harmony remotes 4-5 stars. However, over the past WEEK, I have been unable to connect to the Logitech site, except once in a while for very short periods of time, and usually not long enough to get the job done. When it does work, it is mind-numbingly slow. I went to the Logitech forums to try to determine what was up. There I saw many others with the same problem, since well before Christmas, and over many other times of the year.

Logitech was (and is) unprepared for the volume of people, trying to set up their remotes. All of these people paid money for the remote control, which REQUIRES access to the Logitech site, even for minor changes to the programming in the remote. The price paid is supposed to include this access.

The access problems apply not only to the low-cost Harmony 300, but also to ALL other Harmony remotes. I have the 300 as well as an older 550. The former uses the website-based ("cloud") software at myharmony (period) com. The latter uses the version 7.7 Harmony software which runs on my computer. However, even this pc-based software requires access to the Logitech site. Here is what my software tells me today, the 27th of December:

"We are sorry. Many people like you are excited to set up their new remotes, so we're experiencing a high volume of traffic. Please try again later."

"set up [my] NEW remote?" I can't even get in to add a device or change buttons on my EXISTING remote! Logitech is alienating existing customers, along with the new ones.

Logitech is unable to handle the volume of traffic associated with the hardware they sold and thus has committed BREACH of CONTRACT. Would you consider buying any device which required software, but for which you could not obtain software? And yet this is exactly what Logitech has done.

One star. I hope many others will follow my lead. Logitech deserves the bad press on this one.

I was interested in buying this encyclopedia software, but wondered if it would be compatible with Windows 7, which I intend to install soon. I sent a contact message at the Encyclopedia Britannica website, and ask them this question. This is what they responded:

"The 2010 Deluxe edition DVD is not compatible with Windows 7. However, our 2010 Ultimate DVD will run on Windows 7."

But I do not see the Ultimate software available on amazon at this time (2/23/10). It is available at the Britannica website for $40, and entitled: 'Britannica 2010 Ultimate Reference DVD', and specifically indicates that it will run on Windows 7.

Hopefully, amazon will get it soon, as I have the 'amazon chase visa' and get 3% reward points for all purchases from amazon.

WORLD ATLAS: Either it is very poor or I can't figure out how to use it. Either way, the fault of this product. I mostly bought this Britannica for the world atlas, because I can't get an Encarta world atlas which will run on Windows 7.

ENCYCLOPAEDIA: I lived abroad for years, so I looked up Kerkrade. A small town in Europe. Britannica has one sort of vague paragraph. Then I looked up Kerkrade on Wikipedia and found about 10 - 15 times as much information.

Very well designed interface. An amazing bargain at a trifling price. This sort of reference use to cost people over $1200.

I can't imagine a home being without the EB. Three versions for different age groups.

This is perfect for video editing on a PC laptop: connect a camera to the firewire port and an external hard drive to the USB 2.0 port. I purchased this for use with professional audio recording software based on Yamaha's mlan protocol. My Vaio laptop had a 4 pin firewire put the chipset didn't have enough horsepower to run the protocol. Loaded without drivers and I was off to the races. It also allows me to keep my external firewire hard drive connected. Thumbs up!
